What is Drawize Academy?
Drawize Academy – Learn to draw with Drawize Academy lessons, drawing exercises and feedback. The Academy offers free tutorials with step by step illustrated drawing instructions for complete drawings, as well as lessons and exercises which can be used for focused practice. Additionally, Rate My Sketch offers AI feedback on your own drawings, with a free allowance and options for additional critiques. Drawize lessons teach you an idea, exercises help you to practice it and feedback helps you to decide what to try next.
Start off with drawing what you want to learn how to make. Choose a free step-by-step tutorial (with pencil and paper) for a good starting point. A complete introductory guided lesson is also a good way to get some feedback whilst working through a tutorial. However, you do not have to complete all of the drills for an animal etc. tutorial before starting to create your own drawings. Focused individual exercises are also available to practice specific skills.
For the drawing exercises and for the public tutorials on drawing techniques (with written and illustrated step-by-step description and optionally also with pencil replays) there is no charge. For the first complete guided lesson of every course there is free access with a free account. The remaining lessons of a course are included with the cost of the course. Rate My Sketch has a free allowance and optional additional critiques. Course purchases and critique credits are separate products. Check the course or tool for its current price and allowance.
You don’t need an account to access public tutorials and drawing exercises. We use accounts for our complete, guided lessons (feedback + saved progress). Rate My Sketch shows its current allowance and any account requirements before you submit; its free daily allowance is available without an account. Creating a free account does not buy you a paid course, you still purchase the course separately.
Can I use pencil and paper, a mouse or a tablet?
The tutorials are drawn for the use with pencil and paper for the free illustrated tutorials. The guided lessons as well as the drawing exercises are rendered in your browser and work with mouse, touch as well as with pen and tablet. A stylus can be very helpful to practice strokes, for lessons about placement and proportion as well as line control for example. To get feedback on a paper drawing you can take a photo of it and upload it to Rate My Sketch.
Drawize Academy lessons and exercises run in your browser, so no download of an app is required. You can access all your saved progress for a guided lesson on Drawize Academy from your account. If for some reason a drawing tool doesn’t seem to be working on your device, please try accessing the lessons in a current browser and check that you have touch or pen input switched on if appropriate.
Lessons, practice and feedback
How is a public tutorial different from a guided lesson?
A public tutorial gives you written instructions, cumulative drawing images and optional pencil replays. You follow it on paper or in your own drawing app, without scoring. A guided lesson adds the Academy canvas, feedback at checkpoints and saved progress. Where both versions exist, they use the same lesson content so the drawing steps stay together.
The feedback primarily checks for missing content and for the correct relationships between the content introduced in that step (e.g. whether the head is attached to the body, whether a foreground shape hides the line behind it). Missing essential content or a clearly wrong relationship may need an adjustment and another attempt. Harmless variations in linework, proportion or expression do not need to become a perfect copy to continue. AI feedback can miss or misread something, so compare it with the instructions and your drawing.
Do the drawing exercises use the same AI grading?
No. The separate browser drawing exercises measure specific geometric properties of your strokes, e.g. the roundness of your circles in a circle exercise or the perspective of the lines in a perspective exercise. This feedback does not measure the total artistic quality of your drawings. All lesson feedback as well as Rate My Sketch use AI analysis.
Rate My Sketch is a service to get feedback on a drawing you already have, including an unfinished study. Upload your sketch or draw right in the tool. Get feedback on the strengths of your sketch and on possible corrections. Also get feedback on possible practice exercises to help you to improve. This service is not an objective verdict on your creativity or a substitute for an art teacher. It is meant to give you feedback to help you make decisions.
The optional exercises at the end of the animal lessons are meant for independent practice. Change one feature and see what happens or try another version of the same animal. These drawings and sketches are for your own practice, without another lesson or progress gate. Download any sketch you want to keep from the optional practice canvas before leaving the lesson.

How does Drawize Academy use AI?
The purpose of Drawize Academy is to teach people to draw. We use a variety of tools, including AI, to help prepare lessons and demonstrations for students, as well as providing feedback to students who complete lessons and upload drawings. Some of the course demonstrations, including Draw Cute Animals, are AI generated and note is made of this in the course information for that lesson. The learner completes their own drawings and then practices making the decisions taught in the lesson.
Are the drawing replays a finished image being revealed?
The replayed native pencil and eraser actions for the animal lessons include the checkpoint images which are the cumulative demonstration drawing up to that checkpoint in the replay. The native replayed actions of the drawing and erasing were recorded and then played back for the learner. These are AI generated teaching demonstrations, not real live human artists drawing the animals.
No, the automated feedback provided is AI feedback which can highlight relationships between aspects of your sketch or even suggest further practice. However, this type of feedback can sometimes be incomplete or even wrong so we clearly identify it as AI feedback rather than a human expert review.

Who makes Drawize Academy?
Drawize Academy was created by Lomboos, the team behind the free drawing game Drawize. We use Drawize Academy to provide students with a solid ground in drawing and offering them the opportunity to practise through lessons, exercises and feedback on their work.
In our privacy policy we explain how we handle account information, submitted drawings and images uploaded by you. The sketch-feedback tool also displays information about its upload process. Read those details before submitting material you consider sensitive.
On the selected course or critique offer you can see what you are getting for your money. Before you pay for a course or additional sketch critiques, check the checkout total and read the purchase terms and refund policy.
You can report problems with pages that offer site feedback (i.e. you can describe the page, the action you were trying to take and what went wrong).
