The technique

Draw a rounder circle freehand

  1. 01

    Make it big

    Cover most of the canvas, leaving a margin. With a pen, try letting more of your arm take part in a larger circle. Small circles can be smooth too, but this larger size gives you room to practise the movement.

  2. 02

    Rehearse it in the air

    Hover around the surface of the drawing paper and complete 5 full circles without putting down the pen. This will allow you to get used to the movement before you commit to tracing the shape.

  3. 03

    Draw it in one pass, fast

    Aim for a comfortable, brisk pass, around a second if that suits your device. The first lines may be less accurate. Rehearse the movement, then follow it through instead of repeatedly stopping to correct the edge.

    Draw through, do not stop

    Go round twice without lifting your pen. Let the second lap follow the first instead of stopping to patch the starting point. The two laps may not land exactly on top of each other.

The faults, drawn

These percentages can mean nothing by themselves. Instead, each problem has its own fix. The examples below are all real strokes that I generated with the same code that I used to test the engine.

  • Oval

    One axis is shorter than the other. Compare the width and height before trying another circle.

  • Flat arc

    One section is flatter than the rest. Rehearse the full curve above the canvas, then draw through that section at a comfortable pace.

  • Ratcheting

    The recorded stroke has repeated short stops. Try rehearsing the loop first, then drawing it without those pauses.

  • Tremor

    Small uneven changes run around much of the curve. Try a relaxed, steady pass and compare it with this one.

  • Not closed

    The stroke's ends finish apart. Plan to return to the starting point and check the join.

  • Overshoot

    The stroke continues past its starting point and leaves a crossing or extra arc. Plan a clear stopping point for the next loop.

  • Drifting laps

    The laps drift apart. Rehearse one planned loop and aim to keep each pass close to it.

  • Cramped

    The circle is small on this canvas. Try a larger one with comfortable margins so its curve is easier to see and assess.

How the number is made

What the score actually measures

Roundness

The amount of variation in your radius as you complete the stroke compared to the best-fit circle.

Evenness

deepest run inside the circle − median of the rest21% of the score

Worst run of arcs inside the fitted circle, compared with the typical error elsewhere on that circle. This helps distinguish a flat spot from a circle that is simply small all round. The width of the run is measured at half its deepest dent, so a broad flattening and a narrow dent can be told apart.

Steadiness

residual after harmonics 1–317% of the score

What remains after removing the larger shape variations. Ovality and center offset are measured elsewhere. This measurement picks up small irregularities in the recorded line; it cannot tell whether they came from your hand or the device.

Closure

one stroke: |end − start| / r · more than one: widest angular hole9% of the score

The width of the gap between the start and end of the shape (as opposed to the path). If you lifted the pen off the tablet in the middle of the stroke then the start and end of the path created by the tablet will not be the same as the start and end of the shape. This measurement therefore asks the shape for the width of the largest wedge cut from the center of the shape to the edge, excluding any ink in the wedge.

Commitment

Whether the circle was drawn at a committed pace or slowly steered around. Other measures read its shape, so a slowly traced circle could look good geometrically. This measure reads speed instead. The aim is a comfortable, continuous movement, not tracing a straight line or going as fast as possible.

One go

The number of stops along the stroke, relative to its length. A circle built with repeated stops and re-aims can look round, so shape alone misses that habit. This measure counts those stops rather than every small fluctuation in speed. It does not guarantee a zero count for every valid drawing or device.

Each measured error is mapped through 100 / (1 + (e/e₅₀)^1.6). The combined score is 75% the weighted average and 25% the single worst term, so a good curve cannot entirely cover a circle that never closed. The highest score is 99. Tiny differences near the top can reflect capture noise as well as your line. Every threshold, and the evidence behind it.

Why a freehand circle is hard

A circle asks for a smooth change of direction all the way round. With a pen, your fingers, wrist and arm can share that movement. Rehearsing the whole loop helps you find a combination that feels comfortable at the size you chose.

A small circle and a large one can feel quite different to draw. On a pen surface, try a larger circle and let your arm move comfortably rather than forcing the whole loop from a cramped grip. The score is normalized by size, so the aim is to practise the movement, not gain points simply by drawing bigger.

Speed can feel counterintuitive. When you creep around the edge, it is easy to keep steering and correcting the line. Those corrections may show as small reversals or repeated slowdowns. Try a rehearsed, brisk movement and see how the line changes; faster does not automatically mean rounder.

What your device can and cannot tell us

The geometry of a flat arc between seven and nine o’clock is the same whether drawn with a pen, on a trackpad or with a mouse. The cause, however, can be different. A small screen limits your working space, and a trackpad may make you lift and reposition during a stroke. Compare attempts made with the same device and setup.

On pen, the advice may suggest trying a different arm movement. That is a practice suggestion, not a measurement of which joint you used. On mouse or touchscreen, the feedback focuses on the recorded line. Paper practice is useful too, but this browser score does not measure a drawing made on paper.

When you have got it

Try for three attempts above 80 with no named fault, filling most of the canvas at a comfortable, brisk pace. That is a useful practice target, not a test of your whole drawing ability. When it feels repeatable, try ellipses: the same flowing movement with a different shape to control.

Questions

Does drawing with a mouse or trackpad hurt my score?

It can change how the exercise feels and what scores you reach. A mouse or trackpad may make continuous curves harder than a pen does. Compare your own progress on the same device, rather than against someone with a stylus.

Is drawing a perfect circle actually a useful skill?

Yes, a circle is merely the beginning of drawing control of the circular form. Control of the circle will translate to drawing other forms with circular features such as: ellipses, heads, wheels, etc. Drawings of cups, eyes, etc. will also benefit from the control of drawing a simple circle.

Why did my score go down after I followed the advice?

If the advice asks you to stop slowly tracing and try a brisker stroke, accuracy may fall at first. You are practising a different movement. Look at the named fault as well as the score, and give yourself a few attempts to see what changed.

Why do my circles come out as eggs?

One direction of the loop may be getting stretched or squeezed as you draw. Rehearse a rounder loop before touching down. On paper, try turning the page to find a comfortable movement; on screen, adjust the size or position of the circle instead. The shape alone cannot tell us which joint caused it.

How many times can I use this?

As often as you like. The measurement runs in your browser, with no signup or daily limit. The same recorded stroke and scoring settings produce the same result; drawing another attempt gives you a new result to compare.

Can I erase or start again?

You can erase unwanted ink; the engine measures the strokes that remain. For this exercise, try a fresh continuous stroke when you want to practise the movement again. Use Undo or clear the canvas to start over. Attempts are unlimited.

Is my drawing sent to an AI model?

No. Every number on this page is computed in JavaScript in your browser, so the measurement is arithmetic on the coordinates your hand produced — which is why the same drawing always gets the same score. No model sees your drawing at any point.

What is a good score?

Consistently above 80 with no named fault is a useful target for this drill. Compare it with your earlier attempts on the same device. The highest score is 99, and tiny differences near the top can reflect capture noise as well as your drawing. We do not have a population ranking for first attempts.

Should I use a compass instead?

Use a compass when the job calls for an exact technical circle. This drill practises the freehand movement that can help with construction drawing. Its feedback covers the recorded shape and stroke, rather than whether you could have made a perfect circle with a tool.
