What this is
A measurement, not a quiz
Almost every "what level artist are you" test is a personality quiz wearing a lab coat: you answer questions about yourself and it returns a flattering paragraph. Nothing is measured, so nothing it says can be wrong — or right.
This one asks you to draw, and then does arithmetic on the strokes. Every number below comes from the geometry of what you actually drew: the variance of your circle's radius, the deviation of your line from the path between two dots, the degree of your ellipse against the plane it belongs to, the fraction of a bar by which your marks missed its middle. No model looks at your drawing at any point — every number here is arithmetic on the coordinates your hand produced, which is why the same drawing always scores the same.
The consequence is that it can tell you something specific enough to act on, and also that it has to admit what it cannot see. It measures five skills — lines, precision, proportions, perspective and confidence — and shading is not one of them. Shading is not recoverable from geometry, so rather than draw that axis and leave it blank the result does not claim it at all.

The two scores are different measurements and are not meant to agree. A circle can be geometrically excellent inside a drawing that does not work, and a drawing can work with shaky circles all through it. Use the drills to build the hand, use the critique to find out what the drawing needs next, and when you want the rest taught properly — construction, form, light, composition — that is what the Sketching Essentials course is for.

- Precise · 88+
- Accurate on every drill we can measure. What is left from here is small, specific and worth chasing deliberately rather than by repetition.
- Controlled · 74+
- Your hand does roughly what you intend it to. The gap now is aim and consistency rather than control — the same stroke twice, not a better stroke once.
- Developing · 58+
- The movements are forming and they are recognisably deliberate. Most of what is holding the numbers down is hesitation, not carelessness.
- Early · 42+
- The intention is clear in what you drew and the execution has not caught up yet. This is the level where a few minutes of drills a day moves the number fastest.
- Starting out · 0+
- Nothing here is a verdict on whether you can draw. It is a measurement of four mechanical skills on the device you used, taken once.
These are absolute thresholds, not a ranking against other people. We will show you where you sit against everyone else when enough people have taken this for that number to be real — and the page will say which one it is showing.
Questions
- What does this actually measure?
- 7 drawings, each measured for a different thing: how round your circles are, how straight and well-aimed your lines are, whether your ellipses match the surface they sit on, how accurately you divide a distance by eye, whether the half you drew matches the half you were given, whether the twelve edges of a box agree on where they are going, and whether both ends of a cylinder sit square to its axis. All of it is geometry, computed in your browser. None of it is an opinion about your drawing.
- What does it not measure?
- Shading, composition, colour, likeness, and whether anything you draw is any good. Shading is left off the chart entirely rather than drawn and scored at zero, because pretending to measure something we cannot see is the fastest way to make the numbers we can see worthless.
- Does the device I use affect my score?
- For the drills that measure motor control, yes — a finger on a phone cannot make the same arc as an arm on paper, and we say so on each result rather than pretending otherwise. The proportion and eye-placement drills are the exceptions: placing a tick or an outline costs almost nothing to execute, so those scores mean the same thing wherever you took them.
- Where do I rank against other people?
- We will not tell you until we honestly can. The bands here are absolute thresholds, not percentiles. Once enough people have taken this for a real comparison to exist, the page will show it and say which it is showing.
- How long does it take?
